David Cook

The power that soars through this voice is incomparable to many of the mainstream artist in the mix. Winner of American Idol, season 7, David Cook has the eclectic lyrics assembled through a head swirling mix of harmonies and melodies that is unlike anything out there today. His blend of willful soul leaves us in a trap and isn’t that what Hollywood is all about? A need to identify with someone or something much greater than we are. His desire to “get out of (his) own way” and “push the envelope” of his comfort zone has yielded a beautifully textured album. It sonically spans melodies, tempos and arrangements we recognize as David’s signature all the way to the foray into urban soul. His voice in our soundtrack will a cut and blow you away as his voice reaches heights higher than you could imagine; magnificent.

David is a tenor, but possessor of a stunning instrument that is actually rather rare in rock/pop music. In my opinion he is a dramatic tenor which is a very large voice with a great deal of ring and resonance, that can be pushed to dramatic climaxes more easily than the usual light leggiero voices or warm, bright lyric tenors. Cook’s voice has a very dark, rich, beautiful color compared to other tenors. Yet unlike some dramatic tenors, it doesn’t sound forced or wobbly; in fact the vibrato is spinning and perfectly free, even while he often adds the rasp. There is nobody I have ever heard do this better. He basically sings perfectly clearly, and raspy, simultaneously!

His powerful guitar rifts that expels  is infused with gorgeously driven lyrics and melodies that are spellbinding. He is graced with a voice reminiscent to Bruce Springsteen meets Ed Vedde. We are essentially listening to a man  who can write extremely complex lyrics with off-beat yet woefully ambitious beats. His grasping voice and emotions expresses the frustration that Patrick has over the girls whom he feels are destroying his life and existence. Much like Cook’s sobering voice, Patrick decries the woman to let him go. The contention of the broken love that Cook writes plays well with the exasperating contention between the Quinns as he realizes Gemma is not there anymore. In her place, he sees a woman that is fading with the paint on the wall. Her cracks are visible and it’s getting harder for her to breath. Cook also plays the guitar on the song which is fantastic. Now he’s older and let’s just say, it helps that he has that Easton Caldwell spunk to him. He is as charismatic as a cult leader should be.
