He is a connoisseur of the people and the world around him. He is the true voyeur who watches everything unfold in front of him. He is a reactionary character ready for a change. He relies on taking on a control he doesn’t understand, especially when the world is cold inside. His film verbalizes what he cannot do in reality which the want and desire for a clean break. His idealism set against the harshness of a cynical reality deflects from self-worth and expression. The life of his wife and the medium of his expression are his true religion. Patrick devotes himself to the concept of Gemma. All his films are about her and she is his only female lead. In order to stay sane, cool under pressure, he needs direction in both his living and work spaces. That is the relief and comfort Caldwell gives him. His wife lives for him, not realizing that she stifles his creativity with all her love. In his quest to become the greatest in his industry, he falls hard for his now wife Gemma Valentine. She is his complex muse, a woman he fixates on. The woman has legendarily been the face of his ten pictures with young iconic movie producer, Easton Caldwell. In Quinn’s eyes, she is the crown jewel to his life’s work but her blank canvas is what’s killing this man. He has an insatiable need to control and trap her in a box she can’t escape. He is the charming monster who lives her existence to the point of lunacy. He spends his time people watching, stalking their every existence. He lives vicariously through their mundane existence and uses their lives to build up his vision of his own wife. Patrick becomes violent and jealous of Gemma, restraining her from leaving his side. He guilts her and makes her feel like she is a whore, like a controlling beast he needs to euthanize. He manipulates her to come work with him. Gemma loves him but she is not willing to commit atrocities. She wants to be a mother and raise a child in a loving environment. Patrick wants to reign supreme, therefore, he sacrifices their sanity for glory. He dreams horrific visions of her death because he can no longer conceive how the two of them can coexist. The career of the prominent film director ends when he willing commits an attempted murder towards his wife for all his world to see. It is his sacrifice to their craft. This act destroys Patrick. He quickly gives up any human need to love.
